Home Remedies for High Blood Cholesterol


Cholesterol is one of the essential ingredients of the body and is generally produced in the liver. However, about twenty to thirty per cent generally comes from the food we eat. It is measured in milligrams per 100 millimeters of blood. The normal level of cholesterol varies between 150 - 200 mg per 100 ml. In blood, cholesterol occurs in combination with certain lipids (fats), hence, known as lipoproteins.

Types of lipoproteins

1. Low density lipoprotein (LDL)
2. High density lipoprotein (HDL)

Low density lipoprotein is considered harmful and is associated with cholesterol deposits in blood vessels. It can contribute to problems such as heart disease, stroke. On the other hand, high density lipoprotein plays a salutary role by helping remove cholesterol from circulation and thereby reducing the risk of heart disease. When the ratio of LDL to the total cholesterol becomes high, it increases the risk of arterial damage and heart disease.

Symptoms of High Blood Cholesterol

Following are the major high blood cholesterol symptoms:

1. General fatigue
2. Excess sweating and feel of uneasiness
3. Pain and heaviness in chest area
4. Breathlessness

Causes of High Blood Cholesterol

Following are the major high blood cholesterol causes:

1. Excessive smoking and alcohol consumption
2. Eating high fat diet
3. Obesity
4. Heredity factors
5. Stress and over work load
6. Diseases like diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, liver disease, or hypothyroidism

Natural Home Remedies for High Cholesterol

Following are some of the effective home remedies for high blood cholesterol:



1. Add one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of lime juice in one cup of hot water. Take it daily in morning for natural lowering cholesterol
2. Take lecithin rich diet like egg yolk, vegetable oils, wholegrain cereals, soyabeans, and unpasturised milk. With proper intake of lecithin, cholesterol cannot build up against the walls of the arteries and veins. It is one of the most effective cholesterol lowering diets.
3. Take foods rich in Vitamin E like sunflower seeds, safflower, soyabean oils, butter, and sprouted seed and grains
4. Take Vitamins B6, choline and inositol rich diet such as wheat germ, yeast or vitamin B extracted from bran
5. Boil two tablespoons of dry seeds of coriander in a glass of water and strain the decoction after cooling. Take this decoction twice a day for lowering cholesterol
6. Take onion juice to reduce cholesterol, clean the blood, and regulate the heart
7. Add a teaspoon of methi powder in a glass of water. Take it empty stomach for one month
8. Take fenugreek seeds to control high serum cholesterol


High Blood Cholesterol Treatment and Advice

1. Take low fatty diet
2. Do regular exercise in morning and evening both
3. Avoid meat products
4. Do not smoke and drink alcohol
5. Loose weight if obese
6. Include Roughage and fibrous food in diet
7. Use sunflower, or safflower oil for cooking
8. Drink plenty of water
9. Avoid ghee, butter, cream, white flour, sugar, cakes, pastries, biscuits, cheese and ice cream

Herbal Remedies for High Blood Cholesterol

1. Eat garlic regularly. It is an effective herbal remedy for lowering cholesterol
2. Take 3 grams of mixture of giloye with black pepper powder twice a day. It is also an effective herbal remedy for lowering cholesterol
3. Taking one tablespoon of honey is also good for lowering cholesterol
4. Take guggulu for natural cholesterol lowering
5. Take one teaspoon of oil of the ishabgul seeds twice a day. It will help in lowering blood cholesterol
