How to Control Diabetes

If you have diabetes, you should know how to control diabetes to prevent serious health complications. Diabetes if left uncontrolled can be destructive and deadly. Diabetes that is not under control may result in heart attacks, strokes, blindness, amputations, and kidney failure. Controlling diabetes is like a three-way balancing act:

• The medications you take (insulin or pills)
• The food that you eat
• The amount of exercise you do all need to be balanced

There are some steps you can take to help keep your blood sugar levels in a healthy range

• Take your insulin or pills when you're supposed to
• Follow your diet plan as much as possible
• Get regular exercise
• Check your blood sugar level daily
• Learn as much as possible about diabetes
• Visit your doctor regularly

An ideal diet for diabetes includes low fat, low-glycemic, low sodium, fiber rich diet. Foods rich in fiber include fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Minimize your intake of saturated and trans fat. Monounsaturated (olive oil, canola oils, peanut oil, nuts, avocados) and omega-3 polyunsaturated (walnuts, fish, flaxseed oil) fats are better substitute.

There are a variety of herbs available that can help keep diabetes under control. Some of the herbs that have found to be effective in helping to control diabetes include bitter gourd, green plantain peels, fenugreek seed, mullaca, and agaricus blazei murril mushrooms.

Weight control is another important step you need to take to control diabetes. When you are overweight your body can not make and control insulin. Insulin is used to control the amount of glucose in your blood. Check with your doctor for your ideal weight.
