Hair Loss: Everything You Need to Know

Did you know that hair loss is a common problem for both men and women? In fact, it is estimated that over 50% of men will experience some degree of hair loss by the time they reach 50 years old. For women, the number is even higher. If you are experiencing hair loss, don’t panic! This article will explain what causes hair loss, how to treat it, and how to prevent it from happening again.

What Causes Hair Loss?

There are many different causes of hair loss, but the most common one is a condition called androgenetic alopecia. This condition is caused by a combination of genetics and hormones, and it can affect both men and women. Other causes of hair loss include:

  • Telogen effluvium: This is a condition that causes hair to fall out in large clumps. It can be caused by a number of things, including stress, childbirth, and surgery.
  • Hormonal changes: Changes in hormone levels can cause hair loss in both men and women. This includes changes related to pregnancy, menopause, and thyroid disorders.
  • Medications: Some medications may cause hair loss, including anticoagulants, antidepressants, and hormonal contraceptives. If you experience severe hair loss after starting a new medication, talk to your doctor about changing medications or adjusting the dosage of the one you are currently taking.

How To Treat Hair Loss

There are several different treatments for hair loss, but the most effective one is a medication called finasteride. This drug works by blocking DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is what causes male pattern baldness. It also stops your body from producing more testosterone, so it can be used to treat both male and female pattern baldness. The only downside to this drug is that it has some side effects, including decreased libido and erectile dysfunction.

How To Prevent Hair Loss

There are several ways you can prevent hair loss from happening again once it starts. The first step is to eliminate the cause of your hair loss if possible (see above). If not, then follow these tips:

  • Reduce stress levels: Stress is one of the most common causes of hair loss, and it can cause your body to produce excess amounts of DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Try meditation or yoga to help reduce stress in your life.
  • Eat a healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet will give you all the nutrients you need for healthy hair growth.
  • Get enough sleep: Sleep helps your body to repair itself, so it’s important that you get enough of it every night. Aim for around eight hours each evening if possible!
  • Use a hair loss prevention shampoo: There are several different shampoos on the market that are designed to prevent hair loss. Choose one that contains ingredients like caffeine, saw palmetto, and minoxidil to help reduce shedding.
